The heart of ONA

What is fermented date seed, and what does it do?

It's date seed (the pit left over from date processing) that has been upcycled and undergone fermentation, a process that increases the bioavailability of its naturally occurring polyphenols and fiber.

Ancient ritual, modern fermentation

Long before wellness trends and probiotic capsules, women across the Middle East and North Africa were transforming a byproduct of date processing, the seed, usually discarded, into a nourishing daily ritual. The belief was simple: real beauty and vitality start from the inside.

We didn't invent this ingredient. We reintroduced it, using modern fermentation to unlock more of what was always there.

What fermented date seed actually is

Date seeds (also called date pits or date kernels) are what's left over after the fruit is processed, traditionally treated as waste, despite being naturally rich in dietary fiber, polyphenols and antioxidant compounds. Fermentation is the processing step that makes the difference: it breaks down the seed's structure and increases the bioavailability of its polyphenols, meaning your body can access and use more of what's naturally there compared to raw, unfermented date seed.

What the research suggests

Emerging research on date seed polyphenols points to two main areas of interest:

  • Gut microbiome support. The polyphenols and fiber in date seed may help nourish beneficial gut bacteria, functioning similarly to other prebiotic fiber sources.*
  • Antioxidant activity. Date seed compounds have demonstrated free-radical scavenging activity in lab studies, which is the basis for their role in protecting cells from everyday oxidative stress.*

This is still an emerging area of nutrition science rather than a settled one. Much of the existing research is in vitro or early-stage rather than large-scale human trials. That's part of why we're transparent about calling it "emerging research" rather than overstating what's proven.

Why it's in Gut & Glow

Most collagen brands stop at collagen. We started with the gut, because collagen only does its job well when the system absorbing it is working. Fermented date seed is the ingredient that reflects that thinking most directly: feeding the microbiome first, rather than adding more collagen and hoping for the best.

How ONA uses it

Fermented date seed is one of eight active ingredients in every stick of Gut & Glow, alongside wild-caught marine collagen peptides, baobab fruit, L-glutamine, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, astaxanthin and probiotics.

FAQ

What is fermented date seed?

It's date seed (the pit left over from date processing) that has been upcycled and undergone fermentation, a process that increases the bioavailability of its naturally occurring polyphenols and fiber.

Is fermented date seed the same as regular date seed?

No. Fermentation is a processing step that makes more of the seed's beneficial compounds accessible to the body than raw date seed alone.

What date seeds are used in ONA and why?

ONA uses upcycled Khalas date seeds from Saudi Arabia, chosen for their naturally rich polyphenol profile and the growing body of research surrounding this distinctive date variety. Date seeds contain naturally occurring plant compounds called polyphenols, including gallic acid and catechin. Research specifically examining Khalas date seed extracts has identified these among their notable polyphenolic compounds. In a study comparing 18 date seed varieties, Khalas contained the highest concentration of gallic acid among the varieties tested. Instead of allowing this nutrient-rich part of the date to go to waste, we give Khalas date seeds a new purpose by transforming an agricultural byproduct into the signature fermented date seed ingredient at the heart of ONA Gut & Glow.

Does fermented date seed support gut health?

Emerging research suggests its polyphenols may help nourish beneficial gut bacteria, similar to other prebiotic fiber sources.*
