Why is baobab in a collagen supplement?

What is baobab?
Baobab (Adansonia digitata) is the fruit of the iconic baobab tree, native to the dry regions of sub-Saharan Africa. Sometimes called the "Tree of Life," the baobab produces a unique fruit whose pulp dries naturally inside its hard shell, creating a tangy, nutrient-dense powder that has long been used in foods and drinks.
Unlike many fruit powders, baobab is naturally rich in dietary fiber, vitamin C and plant polyphenols, which is why it has become an increasingly studied functional food.
What does baobab bring to ONA Gut & Glow?
Baobab naturally contains three components that make it especially interesting in a gut-and-beauty formula:
- Prebiotic fiber: Much of baobab's fiber includes soluble, pectin-rich fibers. Laboratory research suggests baobab fruit pulp has prebiotic potential, meaning its fibers can be fermented by beneficial microorganisms in the gut.*
- Naturally occurring antioxidants: Baobab contains polyphenols, plant compounds associated with antioxidant activity.
- Natural vitamin C: Baobab fruit is naturally a source of vitamin C. However, ONA does not rely on our 750 mg of baobab to provide the formula's stated vitamin C dose. Gut & Glow includes 200 mg of vitamin C from acerola per serving.
Why combine baobab with probiotics and collagen?
This is where baobab makes particular sense in ONA.
Our formula brings together 2 billion CFU of Bacillus coagulans with baobab, a naturally fiber-rich fruit with researched prebiotic potential. Think of it as a complementary approach: the probiotic provides beneficial microorganisms, while baobab contributes plant compounds and naturally occurring fibers that make it a thoughtful part of a gut-focused formula.*
Then there's the beauty side. Each serving delivers 8,000 mg of Type I & III marine collagen, alongside 200 mg of vitamin C from acerola. Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation, while baobab adds another whole-food botanical layer to a formula designed around the connection between gut health and beauty.*
Rather than adding baobab simply because it is a trendy "superfood," we chose it because it fits the architecture of Gut & Glow: collagen + gut support + thoughtfully selected plant ingredients.
Sourcing & testing
We use carefully sourced baobab fruit powder selected to meet ONA's quality standards. As with our other ingredients, it is included in our finished-product third-party testing for quality and safety. View our recent lab reports.
FAQ
Does ONA contain enough baobab to provide prebiotic fiber?
ONA contains 750 mg of baobab fruit powder per serving. Because this is not a high-dose fiber supplement, we use baobab as one component of the overall Gut & Glow formula rather than positioning it as your primary daily source of dietary fiber.
Does the vitamin C in ONA come from baobab?
Baobab naturally contains vitamin C, but ONA's declared 200 mg of vitamin C per serving comes from acerola. This allows us to provide a consistent amount of vitamin C alongside our marine collagen.
Why not just take collagen by itself?
ONA was created to go beyond collagen alone. Gut & Glow combines 8,000 mg marine collagen with vitamin C, probiotics, baobab, fermented date seed, L-glutamine, hyaluronic acid and other targeted ingredients in one daily ritual.*
